Mike Oleson Custom Woodworking

About

My studio has been located in Lisbon, Portugal, since 2007. I am both a designer and a woodworker, which gives me the ability to take the process of creating furniture from conception to the finished product. I design and fabricate all the work that comes out of my studio. I received my art and furniture training in the United States, graduating from Oberlin College in 1998 with a degree in Visual Arts, and earning a Masters of Fine Arts degree in Furniture Design from San Diego State University in 2005.

I specialize in unique projects that are visually dynamic and elegant. Importantly, these designs also meet the specific functional needs of each piece and of the client. I also enjoy approaching a project from a conceptual perspective when possible.

My aesthetic and approach to design is shaped by the many things that interest me, including painting, sculpture, music, and literature. Perhaps most notably, I am inspired by the architecture in the places I live and visit: the use of materials, patterns, decorative details, and color schemes that are unique to each locale. By incorporating details inspired by the locale into the work, I am able to make a piece of furniture that is also a document of my experience there.
